This workshop will provide an overview of the Yoruba indigo dyeing method called adire; which is a traditional Yoruba dye fabric technique.
The act of dying was one of the earliest arts among the Yoruba of southwest Nigeria in West Africa dated to have started over 1,000 years ago. The participant at the workshop will have the opportunity to learn immersion dyeing using the Yoruba resist process with natural locally produce indigo dye and the indigo dye bath setting. The participant will be engaged in a 1,000-year-old process that is ancient yet allows self-expression.

Yemisi Ajayi has won a reputation as an innovative textile artist working within the realm
of traditional Yoruba cloth, motifs and indigo dying. She is also a teacher of batik, adire
(starch resist), dye method and Yoruba patchwork quilting. Yemisi began her career as
a textile artist in 1989 in Osogbo Striking out on her own in 1992, Yemisi has had broad
success in the areas of natural dyeing, quilting, textile design, and interior decorating.
She has been teaching Yoruba indigo fabric techniques classes since 1992 gave
lectures and has held workshops in Nigeria, Mali, Kenya, South Africa, Brazil, Jordan,
Indonesia, Malaysia, London, and USA. She works many years with women dyeing
groups. Yemisi Ajayi live in Philadelphia, she is Member of The Philadelphia Guild of Handweavers.
