Members are invited to join us in person or on Zoom for our February meeting:
Mayan Craft Traditions featuring Trama Textiles
We are delighted to invite you to a special member meeting on Saturday, February 22, 10-11 a.m., featuring members of Trama Textiles, a Mayan textile collective. The meeting will be hybrid, but this is one you’ll want to attend in person, if possible, to see and touch their samples.
In the 1980s, Maya women found themselves left alone to support their families because a 30-year civil war in Guatemala was killing so many men. The women were skilled weavers, each Mayan village with its own style, so they sold their traditional backstrap loom products. But because they didn’t speak Spanish, they fared poorly in the international market for handwoven goods.
In 1988, a group of Mayan backstrap loom weavers from across Guatemala created Trama Textiles to expand their market reach. Led by President Ampara de León Rubio, the group works with 100 women from 17 weaving communities across 5 of the country’s regions.
Feel free to bring a friend, as our monthly member meetings are now open to the public!
