Learn to quilt by hand without sewing any seams. In this class, students will use turned-edge applique to create the quilt, using a “quilt as you go” method. The students will also be able to apply decorative elements including embroidery and additional applique features. No machine needed, no binding methods used, no raw edges.
Inspired by quilting from other cultures you will learn how to easily make a quilt.
This class is great for beginners.
Supplies needed:
Fabric for back
Scraps of fabric for quilt and appliqué
Batting: (Quilter’s Dream Cotton White Request Batting is a great option. If you purchase crib size you can share it with another student. You may also use regular quilt batting.
Size 12 Perle Cotton (Sulky 12wt cotton and Presencia thread are a great choices. Traditionally white is used.)
Various embroidery threads (6 strand: DMC, Anchor, Cosmo, Presencia are good brands)
Hand Stitching Needles (Dritz, Clover Gold Eye, or John James Milliners Hand Needles, Package of Size 3/9 will work well. You will be using 7 and 9 mostly.
Scissors to cut fabric (you may use snips for threads)

Sheryl Kessler attended the Philadelphia College of Arts (University of the Arts), transferred and graduated from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (Philadelphia University at Jefferson University). She began her love of textiles with machine knitting and learned hand knitting, quilt making, and embroidery. She is revisiting weaving on the rigid heddle loom.
