April 26, 2025, 10am – 1pm AND May 3, 2025, 10am – 1pm
In this two step workshop we will be creating an abstract piece that will include appliqué and embroidery. If you are versed with embroidery stitches, great, if not – this is a great way to get started!
Week 1: Starting with a piece of crumpled paper (not momigami) we will be designing an outline for our work. We will transfer design onto a piece of cotton or linen muslin and make our color choices of fabric scraps and embroidery floss. There is also a possibility to use watercolor. We will transfer the design shapes onto our fabric scraps, cut them out and pin them to the background.
Week 2: We will attach the fabric shapes or fill parts of our design with stitch. This process is fun because all different kinds of stitches can be used to do so. Towards the end of class we will talk about various ways to finish/mount our piece so it can be hung.
Students should bring the following materials:
2-3 Papers, 8.5”x11” or half that size different weights
Linen or cotton fabric, 10”x14” white or solid colored
Large and small scissors
Pins and embroidery needles (different sizes to accommodate various numbers of strands)
Pencil, eraser, ruler
Black and white sewing thread
Masking tape
Optional materials:
Fabric scraps (I will have lots to share)
Embroidery hoop (personal choice)
Stranded embroidery floss
Watercolors, paint brushes
Erasable fabric pen
