Next Meeting and moving forward
Hi,
It was pointed out that our next meeting is Memorial Day weekend. I don’t want to break up the weekend so I moved our meeting to Monday at 4pm. Please let me know if you plan to attend. If I don’t hear from anyone I will assume no one is showing up.
Please check the calendar before arriving. If we are NOT meeting it won’t be on the calendar.
I spoke with a few members and decided to organize our meetings differently so we can head in a more organized direction. I’ve created a list of topics and we will start with #1 on the topic this month. With the idea that we can go through these topics then design a project and maybe weave in the guild house on their looms as a group? Here is the list (not really in any order yet) and I would love to hear from some of the 50+ members for more ideas of what YOU want to learn!
I do not have in depth knowledge of all of these topics and if you see a topic you would like to lead, please let me know. I have enough knowledge to start the conversation and really want to make this group an opportunity to learn from each other. Ideas are welcome.
- Loom maintenance. Discussion about heddles, shuttles, reeds and loom tools. How to maintain our equipment so we can keep on weaving. We will be “fixing” some of the guilds looms that have some minor issues.
- How to design for weaving. What is an appropriate structure? how do I choose a warp? Which weft will work for the end purpose? How do I figure out yardage needed of warp and weft? what is the most effective and efficient way to wind a warp? What is the most efficient warping technique for the warp I have wound?
- Computer drafting, Fiberworks Silver. Learn the basics of computer drafting. If you ave a software you use that is not Fiberworks, please bring your computer and that can be discussed. We will have the projector set up.
- Becoming an efficient weaver. Discussions of tips and tricks for warping, winding a warp, weaving and finishing.
- Traveling through weaving books. How to understand drafts and designs in weaving books and how to read drafts written by authors who don’t draft how we are used to seeing them written.
- All things selvedge. How to maintain one, draft for one, how shuttles affect the selvedge, and throwing a shuttle for efficiency.
- Color and weave. How the simple act of adding color to a warp can change or create a design. Both weft and warp.
- Differential shrinkage and interesting weave techniques. How weaving with different yarn types create interesting effects. Fun reeds that are available and the fabric they produce. Clasped weft, supplemental warp, weaving with experimental items and other possible creations.
- Ergonomics of weaving. Best physical choices for warping and winding a warp. How to maintain physical stability so we can continue to climb under our looms and weave for hours.
- Trouble shooting. Do you have a weaving question? We can try and answer it here.
- Reverse drafting. Designing a draft from a cloth you like.
- Design and weave a project as a group.
Ideas we can add to this list: all things treadling. The tie up and how to maneuver and shift it to get what you want.
