Evaluating and Scouring Fleece with Shearer and Spinner Marisa Smith

March 22, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

Understanding how to properly scour a fleece requires understanding the natural fiber and its characteristics. In this class we’ll examine the genetic history and purpose of the different fiber types, how to identify problematic vs. unsalvageable vs. good fleeces, and finish with a start to finish skirting and scouring demonstration.

Class will include a lecture given by Marisa followed by hands on scouring and prepping of fleece. You will leave with a plethora of information on how fleece is prepared for spinning and will have the tools to do it yourself!

Class will be held at the Guild House. A 1-hour lunch break will be provided.

March 22, 10 am – 2:30 pm

Supply List:

Students should bring a pair of rubber dish gloves, and a pair of vinyl food prep gloves if uncomfortable touching raw fleece. Students can also feel free to bring fleeces they would like evaluated or skirted.

Teacher Bio:

Marisa Smith is a fiber rabbit hole enthusiast. She started by knitting, then got her hands on some raw fleeces and learned to scour and spin. This naturally and reasonably led to learning how to weave, which of course meant the only thing to do was to cut out the middleman and learn how to shear herself. With too much knowledge acquired at light speed, she loves sharing her passions with anyone who will stand still long enough to hear her extoll the virtues of Tunis wool or shearing Cotswold sheep twice a year.
