Planning & Sewing your Garments with “Precious” Fabrics
Are you tired of weaving rectangles and want to turn your finished fabric into something besides a scarf? Do you have a stash of ‘precious’ handwoven fabric that you are afraid to use? How about a treasured garment that is now out of style but you can’t toss? This workshop will teach you how to incorporate your treasured fabrics or old garments into a piece of wearable art.
Students will learn:
Choosing a suitable “canvas” (pattern) for their project.
How to break up a pattern piece to incorporate multiple precious fabrics.
Finishing techniques for handling handwovens and other fabrics.
A variety of sewn surface design techniques to embellish and enhance a garment.
Students should have:
at least a basic knowledge of sewing and have a sewing machine that they are familiar with and that is in good working order.
A stash of treasured fabrics that they want to turn into a wearable.
Optional: Sergers are very helpful if you have one. Also a favorite sewing pattern (but instructor will offer many suggestions for patterns that work well for art-to-wear).
This course can accommodate “adventurous beginners”, but anyone taking the class should know how to sew a straight seam on a sewing machine. This is not a learn-to-sew course!
Class meets 3 days.
