Double Weave, or Double Cloth, can seem magical to a weaver who hasn’t yet tried it. It can be woven on as few as four shafts and is made up of two sets of warps and one or more sets of weft. It can be woven as two separate layers of cloth, one over the other. Alternatively, the two layers can be joined on one side to create a single layer of cloth twice as wide as the original, or joined on both sides to create a tube.
When adding more shafts or using pick up, more complicated designs can can be created. In this class we’ll be weaving a sampler with 5/2 Perle cotton which will be provided for you. Besides learning the basic techniques listed above we will learn how to weave the top layer in a lace weave so that the bottom layer peeks through. Finally we will plan and weave a pick up design which can be as simple or decorative as you like.
**The above class is the first in a series of Double Weave classes. The next one will be offered in the winter session. That class will be a Workshop style round-robin class, where each student prepares a loom with a different DW structure, and everyone will get a chance to weave a sample of each. We will weave finnweave which is a style of DW pick up, DW based on an overshot design, Block DW based on a Profile draft, exploring differential shrinkage and more. The class will be open to weavers with some familiarity with DW.
All students will be weaving with 5/2 cotton and all materials will be provided.
