April meeting and updates

At our last meeting we finished weaving and took the small sample off the loom. I brought it home, secured the ends with a sewing machine, and washed it in the washing machine. As we talked about, it shrunk. I’ve added photos in the photo area.

Before washing the 100% cotton sample measured 12.25 x 31″ without fringe. After washing it measures 10″ x 25.5. That’s a big difference and something to consider when you begin designing.

We discussed doing overshot for the next project but I would like to get some more feedback on how to proceed with that. I will bring a computer and we can go over some notes I have from an overshot class I took.

On that note, we are scheduled to meet on the 21st which is the same day as the Manayunk Food Festival. So travel might be complicated. Do we want to meet? Reschedule? Proceed as planned? Or wait till next month. Please let me know.

Thank you for taking care of that, Melissa. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend on the 21st, I have a work commitment that entire weekend.

Thanks for wet finishing and capturing shrinkage information. I vote to change the next meeting date because people going there use the movie lot even though it is far grim the event and there is quite a bit of traffic.

I was not aware of the festival, I can see how it might be a problem.

I am going to cancel the 21st. We will meet May 26 at 1 pm.

On another note, I will be warping 5+ looms for a walk in and weave class in June. I do have help from another member but if anyone wants to help wind warps and warp looms to learn fast ways of warping, please reach out to me, education@pghw.org and I will add you to the list. It’s a great way to learn by doing!! And if we want, maybe we can warp another loom for everyone who helps to weave off a towel of their own!!
