Another new spinner

Hi! I’ve been knitting for five years but just got access to my first spinning wheel. It’s an Ashford single action. I’ve got everything setup, but I’m having trouble getting going. It seems like my work keeps wanting to bunch at the orifice, and I’m just having trouble with take up in general. I’ve tried adjusting the brake 100 times but can’t seem to find the spot that works. Are there any techniques I should try or is it the kind of thing where I just have to keep failing until it clicks?

Hi Jason, Welcome and you’ve come to the right place! We have a spinning meetup this Sunday at noon at the guild house in Manayunk. Can you come to that? We have an Ashford Traditional you can use at the guild house if you don’t want to bring your wheel. I’m sure there is someone there who can help you. We are a large spinning group and love to help others learn to spin!

Where are you located? Is Manayunk convenient for you to get to? We are very close to the Wissahickon Bus terminal if that helps.

Are you the same Jason that was at the Center City knitting group?

I used to go to a meetup in Center City but it’s been a long time so yeah it was probably me! I’m located in NW Philadelphia so not far from Manayunk. I’m not sure I can get there this weekend but I’ll keep an eye on the schedule. Definitely feels like in-person instruction would probably go a long way. Thank you for the warm welcome ☺

I’m in E Mt Airy so if I’m near you, I’d be happy to make a home visit.
